Founded in 1976, Los Alamos Technical Associates (LATA) provides technical and project management services to a varied clientele including federal agencies, state governments, municipalities, and a broad range of private sector industrial clients. LATA is currently looking for an experienced, accomplished, self-motivated Accountant for a position in our established Albuquerque, New Mexico office.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: The Accountant 10 position assists the Controller in preparing journal entries, general ledger account reconciliations, revenue recognition, budget tracking, and invoicing. This position applies a variety of accounting concepts, practices, and procedures to record, classify, and examine records of financial transactions. The ability for high-level analysis, micro level reconciliations, problem solving, variance analysis, report generation, and timely solutions for customer requests are critical components for this position in supporting the Controller. Attention to detail and accuracy in work products is imperative and required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Reconciles critical accounts timely to ensure correct and reliable data. 1.1 Analysis of individual accounts to ensure data was entered correctly and costs are accounted for in the correct accounts. 1.2 Reconciliation of identified accounts on a regular basis to ensure critical accounts reflect the correct balance. 1.3 Coordinates with internal customers, when necessary, to obtain and verify costs that are in individual accounts 1.4 Validates critical accounts match the expected balance and reports to Controller any variances within accounts.
  2. Prepares journal entries to support monthly activities. 2.1 Analysis of financial data and schedules for journal entries to ensure completeness and accuracy of data. 2.2 Reconciliation of accounts when necessary to ensure journal entry is justified
    and necessary. 2.3 Coordinates with internal customers when necessary to obtain and verify data for journal entries. 2.4 Validates that journal entry is entered into system correctly and matches verified backup
  3. Performs cost and revenue budget analysis 3.1 Analysis of costs and revenue to explain why budget variances exists.
    3.2 Reconciliation of costs and revenue to budget when differences are identified. 3.3 Coordinates with internal customers to obtain data in order to supports or explain budget analysis.
    3.4 Validates the accuracy of the cost and revenue to aid in the decision-making process of the company.
  4. Prepares project invoices and reconciles project costs 4.1 Responsible for monthly preparation and processing of client billings per contract and FAR 4.2 Analyze and reconcile project invoices, unbillable, costs on hold, and the overall project health while timely communicating findings. 4.3 Provide both internal and external support to track and collect project accounts receivable 4.4 Assistance with project setup/budgeting; including review of contract compensation and billing methods


  1. Chart of accounts management to facilitate new account setup, linking accounts to organizations, and project account groups.
  2. Assists in the monthly close process by opening and closing accounting periods and verifies that all system processes have been completed for a close cycle.
  3. Reporting state and local taxes, as required for gross receipt taxes, excise taxes, and commercial activity taxes.
  4. Collaborates with the other finance department personnel to support overall department goals and objectives.
  5. Supports audit requirements.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Education and Experience – Associates degree or six (6) years’ experience in accounting or business related field plus three (3) years progressive experience in accounting operations to include the production of accounting reports. Considered a plus: experience working with Deltek Costpoint and Cognos report writer in a government-contracting environment and web based payment experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proficient knowledge in:  Accounting, budget and cost analysis principles and theories.  Internal & External, financial-auditing practices and principles.  Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP), Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) and the Federal Accounting Regulation (FAR) regulations, Federal and State laws.  State Gross Receipt Taxes how applies and when it requires Gross receipts are needed to be filed.  Office management and record keeping practices; Ability to:  Work with all levels of management and diverse ethnic groups.  Work independently and manage multiple tasks, including assignment of proper prioritization; exercise initiative and work under pressure.  Determine operational trends that are impacting cost and revenue budget analysis.  Meet deadlines Skill:  Intermediate-level computer skills that include all the Microsoft Office Suite of software.  Technical and narrative writing techniques.  Time, task and project management. Other Skills Required:  Average word per minute typing of 30  Proficient in 10 key typing

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office setting. Regular office hours are required of this position with evening and weekend work as necessary. Physical work demand is minimal with lifting up to 10 lbs. Work environment may be fast paced with multiple assignments and deadlines to meet.
